The Power of Belief: The Surprising Impact of Belief on Health

How to harness the power of belief to make your life and health better

Belief is a mental acceptance or conviction that something is true or exists, often without direct evidence or proof.

It is a powerful force that shapes our reality in ways we often underestimate.

It influences our thoughts, emotions, and actions, ultimately impacting the outcomes we experience in various aspects of life.

These thoughts and ideas that we hold to be true shape how we perceive reality and interpret the world around us.

They influence our motivations and drive our actions towards achieving certain goals.

They influence our habits, routines, and the decisions we make daily.

From achieving personal goals to overcoming obstacles, the power of belief can be a driving factor in our success and well-being.

However, this remarkable phenomenon is not just confined to abstract aspirations; it has concrete implications for our health.

The Power of Belief in Our Health

In the medical world, the placebo effect is probably the strongest evidence that we have on the power of belief.

The placebo effect is a fascinating psychological phenomenon where a person experiences a real improvement in their symptoms or overall health after receiving a treatment that has no therapeutic value, like a sugar pill or a saline injection.

It hinges on the patient's expectation and belief that the treatment they’re receiving is effective, which can lead to genuine physiological and psychological improvements.

The placebo effect highlights the powerful connection between the mind and body.

It proves that our beliefs go beyond affecting our perceptions, but also how our bodies physiologically respond to stimuli, like the sensation of swallowing a pill or the interaction with a healthcare professional.

There’s an interesting study called the milkshake experiment, that was conducted by Dr. Alia Crum and her colleagues, that aimed to explore how our beliefs about food can affect our physiological responses.

46 participants involved in the study were divided into 2 groups. Each group was given a different milkshake to drink.

Group 1 was given an “indulgent” milkshake labeled as a high-calorie, rich, and indulgent shake (620 calories) while group 2 was given a “sensible” milkshake labeled as a low-calorie, sensible, and healthy shake (140 calories).

Researchers measured levels of ghrelin (a hormone that signals hunger to the brain) before and after consuming the milkshakes.

(High ghrelin levels indicate that one’s hungry while low levels indicate that one’s full.)

They found that the ghrelin levels in Group 1 participants dropped significantly after drinking the milkshake, indicating a feeling of fullness and satisfaction, while the ghrelin levels in Group 2 participants remained relatively stable, suggesting they felt less full.

What the participants didn’t know, however, was that they all drank the same milkshake (380 calories).

So, why were the results different? It boiled down to what the participants believed they were consuming.

Believing the milkshake was indulgent and high-calorie triggered a stronger feeling of fullness, while believing that the milkshake was sensible and low-calorie produced an opposite effect, even though it was the same milkshake.

Their bodies responded to what they believed they were consuming rather than the actual nutritional value of what they consumed.

The Takeaway

We can’t ignore that there’s strong evidence that what we believe influences how we think, which in turn directly influences how we act.

How then can we harness the power of belief to make our lives better especially when it comes to our health?

There’s an easy 5-step framework that you can follow to turn your limiting beliefs into empowering ones that propel you into action…

Step 1 - Identify the limiting beliefs

Q: What specific thoughts or beliefs do you have about this situation that might be holding you back?

Step 2 - Examine the origin of the beliefs

Q: How did you develop these beliefs? Are they based on personal experiences, assumptions, or external influences?

Step 3 - Understand the effects of the beliefs

Q: How are these beliefs impacting your actions and feelings towards this situation?

Step 4 - Reframe your thinking

Q: What new, positive belief about this situation can you adopt?

Step 5 - Develop a practical action plan

Q: What specific action plan can you create to integrate this new way of thinking into your daily routine?

The most important thing to remember is that for you to actually start believing something different from what you already know, you have to act as if you already believe it.

It’s difficult to believe something you have no proof of. Beliefs are proved by actions.

Therefore, you need to gather actual evidence that supports the new belief by doing things that are in alignment with it.

Here are a few examples…

To start believing that healthy eating is enjoyable and satisfying, start preparing healthy meals as if they are gourmet dishes. Experiment with new recipes. Try using different herbs and spices to enhance flavors.

To start believing that exercise is a fun and rewarding activity, engage in physical activities that you find enjoyable, as if you already believe exercise is fun.

To start believing that you’re capable of managing stress effectively, start practicing stress-reduction techniques like taking breaks from work, or spending time on hobbies, as if you already believe that these habits will help you manage stress.

Even if you don’t currently believe that you’re a person who takes care of their health, start acting as if you are, and sooner or later, you will become that person.

What limiting beliefs have been holding you back from making healthy choices? Try using the 5-step framework to harness the power of belief to transform your life and health.

Here’s to a limitless life!
